Printable Booklets for Emergent Readers
Early childhood teachers tend to spend hours of time searching for just the right books for their students for both shared reading and guided reading literacy experiences. Once a book is located, it is sometimes even more difficult to find multiple copies, books that can be sent home for further reinforcement, and/or books that can be made even more personal with student drawn artwork, etc. Below, you will find a growing collection of free printable booklets for use in your classroom or home school. The booklets are un-leveled reading materials for emergent readers. They correspond to typical shared reading stories, focus on word families and phonics skills, single in on sight words, or contain concepts for science, math, and social studies commonly used in early childhood themes/lessons.
Feel free to print the booklets, utilize them and the corresponding materials with your children, and then send the readers home for students to continue to practice their ever increasing reading skills!

Brown Bear Brown Bear Shared Reading
I See Colors
( Cover , Inside Sheets, Bottom Sheet )
Students draw a picture of something that is the color mentioned on each page. They may also kidwrite the name of the object.
- Features: Color words and color recognition; Repeated Words/Phrases - 'What do you see?', 'I see a'
- Instructions: Copy the 'Cover' and 'Bottom' pages onto the same color of paper. Copy the 'Inside Sheets' onto plain white paper. Cut apart the 'Inside Sheets' and staple to the back page in the order the colors are mentioned in the lessons.
A shapes booklet in which students count the number of shapes seen on each page.
- Features: Shape words and shape recognition; Numerals and one to one correspondence; Repeated Words/Phrases - ' 'We see', 'buttons'
- Instructions: Make copies double sided (title one sided, page 2 + page 3, page 4 + page 5, etc.) Cut in half. Correlate. Staple.
A cute booklet shared a many years ago on the Teachers.net chatboard! Students color the shape the color mentioned on each page. The shapes form a monster at the very end! See the 'I See Shapes Lesson' for another way students could make this booklet.

An individual retelling chart in which students pull the letter strip through each time to reveal a new alphabet letter to read with the poem.

Mouse's Lunch

Students draw a picture of something that the mouse could eat on each page, making sure to draw the correct number as mentioned in the text. They may also kidwrite the name of the object.

A retelling booklet in which students write in missing letters, draw pictures, and kid write - All based on the story with the same titleby Rozanne Lanczak Williams.
- Features: Repeated Words/Phrases; Rhyme
- Instructions: Copy pages 1 and 2 onto the same color of paper. Copy pages 3 and 4 onto plain white paper. Cut apart pages 3 and 4 and staple to the back page so that the animals are in the same order as the story.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A great take home booklet for after reading Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar! See the 'I Like Bugs Lesson' for a way students could take more ownership in making a similar booklet.
- Features: Numerals and one to one correspondence; Days of the week; Repeated Words/Phrases - 'On', 'he ate through', 'but he was still hungry'
- Instructions: Make copies double sided, cut in half, and staple.
